Serving as PI Outside Columbia

The primary professional obligations of full-time faculty are to the University. For this reason, full-time Columbia faculty generally are not allowed to serve as Principal Investigators on awards administered by other institutions.

Officers who wish to be the PI on an externally funded award that is administered by another institution need the prior authorization of the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR), as well as the appropriate dean, director, and/or chair.

Requests for EVPR approval should include the PI request form (link below), and may be submitted to [email protected] after receiving approval from the appropriate dean, director, and/or chair.
