Robert Klitzman, MD - Professor of Psychiatry, Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, Joseph Mailman School of Public Health Director, Online and In-person Masters of Bioethics Programs, Columbia University, Ethical Challenges Posed by Covid-19
Focusing on a non-clinical topic of COVID-19, Dr. Klitzman talked about different ethical aspects of medical crises such as these current one. While such a pandemic was not unexpected, it hit a mostly unprepared world. Future plans on how to better handle such situations have to be developed. Open questions are prioritizing in hospital treatments (triage), on which level crisis standards have to be developed and enforced, how to balance aspects such as for example quick research results vs. good research practices, fast reopening to stimulate the economy vs. long closing to preserve health.
