SlicerDicer for Research

SlicerDicer in Epic is a self-service reporting and visualization tool that lets authorized users quickly explore clinical and operational data without writing SQL or building complex reports. Using an interactive, drag-and-drop interface, you can “slice” and “dice” patient populations by applying filters (such as demographics, diagnoses, procedures, medications, encounters, locations, and timeframes) and view results as counts, trends, and simple charts. It’s designed to support rapid cohort exploration and basic analytics, helping teams answer common questions, identify patterns, and monitor performance using standardized Epic data domains and definitions.

For Research, SlicerDicer can be used to perform early feasibility and cohort discovery—estimating the size of a potential study population, refining inclusion/exclusion criteria, and understanding trends before pursuing a formal data request. It’s especially useful during study planning and protocol development, with the understanding that research use must follow your Columbia and NYP’s governance, Privacy requirements, and IRB/TRAC/EDUS approvals.
