Session 1: Recognizing Influences and Biases in Research Dr. Brian Nosek (University of Virginia and Center for Open Science) discussed susceptibility to implicit biases and how it may affect the conduct of science, with examples and counter-examples from a variety of disciplines. Introduction and moderation discussion led by Nicholas Lemann (Columbia University)
Session 2: Robust Science: Problems and Solutions An interdisciplinary panel discusses the types of bias that may affect the conduct of science and ways to prevent them. Moderator: Dr. Maria Zuber (MIT and former Chair of National Science Board). Panelists: Dr. Brian Nosek, Dr. David Madigan (Columbia University), Dr. Geraldine Richmond (University of Oregon), and Dr. Shai Silberberg (NIH)
Session 3: "Put the Ph. Back in the Ph.D." and Other Novel Approaches to Scientific Training. Dr. Arturo Casadevall (Johns Hopkins) provides an overview of a new approach to graduate scientific education that focuses on critical thinking, creative problem solving, and rigorous research methodology. Panel discussion follows presentation moderated by Dr. Pamela Smith (Columbia University) and including panelists Dr. Melissa Begg (Columbia University), Dr. Ericka Peterson (Columbia University), and Dr. Anne L. Taylor (Columbia University) in addition to Dr. Casadevall.
Session 4: Journal Editor Perspectives on Rigor and Transparency. Dr. Marcia McNutt (President of National Academy of Sciences and former editor of Science) moderates a conversation among journal editors on their perspectives on the role of scientific journals in promoting rigor and transparency. Panelists include Dr. Howard Bauchner (Editor, JAMA), Dr. Veronique Kiermer (Executive Editor, PLOS), and Dr. Meredith LeMasurier (Editorial Director, Nature)
Session 5: Wrap-up: Observations and Lessons Learned. Dr. Sandra Soo-Jin Lee (Columbia University) leads a roundtable conversation that reflects upon the day’s discussions. Panelists: Dr. Marcia McNutt, Dr. Maria Zuber, and Dr. Pamela Smith
