Field Research Preparedness and Safety
At Columbia University, academic exploration extends beyond the classroom, often taking researchers into diverse and challenging environments. Whether in remote jungles, arid deserts, bustling urban landscapes, or marine ecosystems, field research plays a vital role in expanding our understanding of the world.
Why Field Research Safety Matters
Field research introduces researchers to a variety of risks that may not be present in a traditional laboratory setting. To ensure the safety of all researchers, EH&S has developed a training course, TC7800 Field Research Preparedness and Safety, aiding researchers in planning field research.
The short training details the Pack and Go Cards that summarize crucial information as well as the Columbia Resources in the sidebar and can be brought with researchers on their trip. Below are general resources EH&S has prepared for researchers engaging in field research, also briefly discussed in the training. The videos below are not in the training but are also available for more in-depth information related to field research topics and may be reviewed before planning field research activities. As most of the material here and in the training is similar, the training is not required unless you are seeking detailed information on the Pack and Go Cards or a certificate for Field Research Safety Training.
