Recent Announcements and Updates

6/17/2024:

  • Effective Monday, June 17, the Morningside campus will be open to all individuals, including non-CUID holders, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
  • Access during these hours is available through the College Walk gates at 116th Street and Broadway, 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, the Wien Gate on 116th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive, and the Earl Gate at 117th Street and Broadway.
  • From 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., access is restricted to individuals with a valid Columbia University ID. Entry during these hours is through the north pedestrian gates at 116th Street and Broadway, 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, and the Wien Gate on 116th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive.
  • For questions regarding access, please contact Public Safety at [email protected].
  • Columbia affiliates should continue to pre-register guests visiting the Morningside campus. Please note that circumstances may require a return to restricted campus access, and adherence to university rules and policies is crucial for maintaining an open campus environment.
  • Please note that, as always, all research-related visitors must comply with the Compliance and Training Requirements for Visitors Involved in Research Activities.

6/05/2024:

  • Effective Wednesday, June 5, a new process for guest registration is available for all Columbia affiliates, including those from Barnard and Teachers College.
  • Affiliates can complete an online registration form to authorize guests and event attendees.
  • After registration, guests will receive an email confirmation with a QR code, which they must present with a government-issued ID for campus entry.
  • QR codes are valid for a single entry, and separate registrations are required for each day of access.
  • Event organizers can submit bulk requests for large events following specific instructions on the form.
  • Registration forms must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. the day before the guest's intended entry.
  • Emergency same-day requests can be sent to [email protected] for review, although advance registration is preferred, and same-day requests may not always be accommodated.
  • Please note that, as always, all research-related visitors must comply with the Compliance and Training Requirements for Visitors Involved in Research Activities.

5/20/2024:

  • Effective Monday, May 20, access to research labs and facilities on the Morningside campus is open to all Columbia affiliates, including faculty, officers of research, postdocs, students, and technical staff from any Columbia campus, i.e., Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Manhattanville, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, and Nevis Laboratories. This access does not include affiliates such as Barnard College or Teachers College.  Relevant research deans’ approval remains required for any exceptions, including research-related visitors.

5/9/2024:

  • As of Friday, May 10, all Morningside campus researchers, including faculty, officers of research, postdocs, students, and technical staff, will be granted access to the campus for research activities, regardless of whether the activities are externally funded. Your deans will notify you of any information needed for granting this access.

5/7/2024:

Access for Morningside Researchers

  • As of Wednesday, May 8, all individuals based on the Morningside campus involved in externally sponsored research, regardless of the sponsor, may access the Morningside campus for research-related activities. This policy applies to faculty, officers of research, postdocs, students, and technical staff involved in externally sponsored research. Your deans for research will communicate the process by which access will be granted. These deans will then contact Public Safety for ID activation.
  • For those working on research that is not externally sponsored, if your project requires on-campus activity, you may continue to obtain access for yourself and team members through your research dean as needed.
  • If you are not certain whether your project is externally sponsored, please contact your Sponsored Projects Administration project officer for clarification.

5/6/2024:

As of Monday, May 6, a (very) limited number of non-CUID visitors will be allowed on campus. Examples of such visitors include:

  • technical people needed to keep research equipment functioning, or
  • someone whose presence is vital to a long-standing research project

Researchers seeking to obtain access for non-CUID visitors must email the relevant research dean the following information:

·  Name and affiliation of the non-CUID visitor

·  Date and time that the visitors will arrive and leave

·  Name of the faculty member they are visiting

·  Reason for the visit

If access is approved,  these visitors must at all times be escorted by an individual with a CUID -- they need to be picked up from the 116th and Amsterdam gates, and dropped off there again at the close of the visit.

5/4/24:

  • As of Friday, May 3, all faculty, officers of research, postdocs, students and research staff who require physical access to their laboratories for research continuity purposes may obtain access to do so.
  • The relevant deans for research must coordinate this access with Public Safety.  They are in the process of generating lists of individuals who require access for research continuity.  The relevant deans for research must approve any request for access.
