Principal Investigator (PI) Responsibilities:

-Additional training courses may be required depending on the nature of the laboratory work (e.g., Bloodborne Pathogen and Biological Safety, Radiation Safety, DEA Controlled Substances).

Visit PI training for more information.

 Chemical Hygiene Plan:

The Columbia University Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) applies to faculty, staff and students on all Columbia University campuses, including the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI), engaged in the laboratory-based use of hazardous materials. The CHP does not address the use of radioactive materials or biological agents. Information on these materials can be found in the University’s Radiation Safety Manual and Biosafety Manual, respectively.

As at Barnard, the standard package of personal protective equipment used in laboratories at Columbia includes a lab coat, protective eyewear and gloves.

Columbia University’s Personal Protective Equipment Policy addresses the use of PPE in all University laboratories & support areas. The Policy is designed to ensure that the University’s research & teaching community understand proper PPE selection, PPE use and maintenance, and meet established safety standards.

Visit the PPE informational page for further details.

As a reminder, at least one C-14 Certificate of Fitness holder shall be present during all times while laboratories are in operation.

This requirement applies at all times including weekends, evenings and holidays. Laboratory personnel can obtain a C-14 through Columbia University EH&S or directly through the FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.

More information can be found on the certificate of fitness information page.
